In 2021, tourism in Vietnam in general and tourism in the capital in particular identified the domestic market as the main focus. To attract domestic tourists, many localities and units have changed their mindset, creating many new products aimed at unique and unusual tours to draw in local visitors.
Sports and adventure tourism “explodes”
In recent years, tourism activities linked to sports have become popular. This type of tourism attracts a large number of tourists with high spending capacity, so it has been emphasized by many localities and units, including: golf tourism, marathon races, paragliding competitions, and off-road racing…
Due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, many sports tourism activities had to be temporarily suspended. However, many localities have made efforts to organize sports tournaments, attracting thousands of athletes and tourists to promote local tourism, notably the first-ever Tiền Phong Marathon held on Ly Son Island (Quang Ngai), the Mekong running race, and paragliding competitions in Mù Cang Chai (Yen Bai) and Putaleng (Lai Chau)…
Nguyen Minh Tri, Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Quang Ngai Province, stated that the marathon held in Ly Son Island has opened up great potential, allowing Ly Son to organize similar large-scale activities. More importantly, it serves as a “test” for Lý Sơn to confidently organize tourism activities, from accommodation to sightseeing for 3,000 to 3,500 people.
At the beginning of 2021, many localities promoted and introduced running races and many large sports events to attract athletes and tourists to participate, such as: Tiền Phong Gia Lai running race (March 2021), Ba Be Jungle Marathon (scheduled for March 2021), VnExpress Marathon Amazing Halong (August 2021), and the international heritage marathon in Hanoi (September 2021)… In addition, many mountainous provinces like Lai Châu and Lào Cai continued to organize international paragliding competitions.
Besides sports tourism products, many adventure tourism products are expected to be exploited in 2021, such as mountain climbing and trekking (outdoor tourism)… This product is highly attractive to young tourists who love exploring nature. Many travel agencies have developed adventure tourism tours in preparation for implementation in 2021.

Fivestar Travel Company has surveyed and developed tour products to conquer mountain peaks such as Kỳ Quan San (also known as Bạch Mộc Lương Tử) in Lào Cai and Tả Liên Sơn peak (Lai Chau). On January 14, the UNESCO Travel Club organized a survey trip for a new tour in the form of caravan tourism (self-driving) combined with trekking to conquer Puxailaileng peak (Nghệ An).
Chairman of the UNESCO Travel Club, Truong Quoc Hung, informed that to attract domestic tourists, travel units will focus on exploiting new tourism products alongside traditional tours such as ecological tourism and resort tourism. Adventure tourism products that explore wild nature will be a new trend in 2021.
Caution and choosing a reputable organizing unit are necessary.
Currently, there are many invitations and introductions to trekking tours, nature exploration, mountain climbing, and “cloud hunting” on social media platforms like Facebook and Zalo with attractive calls.
Director of Fivestar Travel Company, Luong Duy Doanh, stated that there are many forms of self-exploration and mountain climbing. However, these are adventure tours that require both the organizing unit and participants to be well-prepared in terms of health, skills, and personal belongings, so self-guided forms without experience and clear guidance can be very dangerous.

Meanwhile, Mr. Truong Quoc Hung expressed that exploring wild nature also requires regulations for tourists in protecting the landscape and environment, and not harming nature.
“Many groups of tourists casually litter along the way or unintentionally carve their names on rocks and trees. This will seriously affect nature and heritage sites. Travel companies belonging to the UNESCO Travel Club always provide clear guidelines, requiring tour guides to remind tourists to maintain awareness during their exploration journey,” said Mr. Truong Quoc Hung.
In 2021, domestic tourism remained dominant. To attract domestic tourists, travel agencies must develop many new products to meet the needs of various customer groups. Unique, unusual, and adventurous tours are expected to be heavily exploited in 2021.
However, tourists participating in these products need to thoroughly research information and choose experienced and reputable organizing units to ensure safety, health, and the success of the trip.
